Panda PonderLearning new content does not happen quickly; it requires practice sessions that are spread over time. Students need to practice a skill at least 24 times before they reach 80 percent competency (Anderson, 1995; Newell & Rosenbloom, 1981.) Frequent, short practice sessions early in the learning process result in the greatest amount of learning, which gradually decreases as students refine their knowledge and skill sets. It takes a great deal of practice for students to perform a skill with speed and accuracy. When they first learn a skill or process, students should have practice sessions that are immediate and close together (massed); over time, practice sessions can be spaced out (distributed). It is important to provide sufficient and guided practice prior to moving students to independent practice. If this is not done, students might practice incorrectly or develop bad habits and errors as they execute the process. From Classroom Instruction that Works p. 111-112 Shout Outs
