Cafeteria- Next two Weeks
Duty for this week
1st grade-Stitt/L. Miles (Johnson & Allen)
2nd grade-Scott/Guice (Floyd/Dumas/Jackson)
3rd grade-Bowie/Moss (Counselor Brown/Alphabet)
4th grade-Brown/Conners (Gay/Allen)
5th grade-Marable/Roach (Alphabet/Floyd)
During the next two weeks, teachers will teach and model cafeteria behavior and expectations to students.
Below is the solution that your colleagues developed. If this does not work, we will go back to teacher monitoring during lunch.
The key to success with this plan below is
- (1) homeroom teachers taking ownership of students behavior in the cafeteria;
- (2) explicitly teaching students the expected behavior;
- (3) holding students accountable for those expectations;
- (4) paras being consistent and attentive during their supervision;
- (5) teachers being consistent with their expected behaviors as listed below.
Teachers will be allowed to hold students from recess for no more than 10 minutes due to unacceptable behavior in the cafeteria. Teachers cannot deny recess for the entire class due to the behavior of a few.
Leadership Suggestion
For the next two week cafeteria will remain the same (teachers and paraprofessionals in the cafeteria) while the following is implemented:
- Teachers will teach the cafeteria rules and expectations to their students
- You can do this in your class or take the students to the cafeteria, when not in use (8:45-10:00) and model and discuss the behavior expectations
- Follow the three rules:
- Raise your hand if you need something (bathroom, utensils)
- Stay seated (absolutely no getting up unless you have permission or you are collecting the trash or table washer)
- Talk to your elbow partners (inside voices or whisper)
- Follow the three rules:
- You can do this in your class or take the students to the cafeteria, when not in use (8:45-10:00) and model and discuss the behavior expectations
- Each class must implement a behavior policy in your class regarding when following or not following the cafeteria expectations and rules
- Example: Marbles in a jar for when they follow the rules/expectations, No marbles when they don’t. X number of marbles equals a reward of some type (eat in the classroom with teacher, extra recess, extra dojo points, etc.) Monitors will give a report to the teacher on how the class did.
- If the entire class was good or some were good, let the teachers know. If one or two students are the ones acting out, Monitors, will let the teachers know of those students (students may miss up to 10 minutes of time out at recess due to the cafeteria behavior, but it is not to exceed 10 minutes. Best practice is to also call the parent and let me know of the cafeteria behavior).
- Implement consistent rules and expectations (see rules above)
- Teachers are to back up the paraprofessionals with behavior. To help the paraprofessionals re-establish respect, the teachers need to take what they say about the students and give a consequence.
- The stop light will be used- no classes are to sit directly under the light as we know it’s sensitive. We are working to resolve that.
- Students quietly come into the cafeteria with their teacher
- Those students who are getting school lunch time up in the line, those with lunch from home go to their table
- Students are sitting in the seating chart assigned by the teacher
- Last 5 minutes 2 people from each class will do their cafeteria jobs
- First 7 minutes there is no talking and students are to eat and listen to the music. After the 7 minutes students can talk.
- The stop light will be used- when the red light comes on all hands up and once all hands up students can put them down. They are not to keep their hand up until the color changes. Then students are to continue in silence for 1 minute. Then back to talking to elbow peers.
- To gain attention of the students in the cafeteria we will be using our hands, hands raised means voices off and students raise their hand too. We are not going to yell or clap.
- At the time the teachers are to pick up their students they will be lined up in the designated area.
- Raise your hand if you need something (bathroom, utensils)
- Stay seated (absolutely no getting up unless you have permission or you are collecting the trash or table washer)
- Talk to your elbow partners (inside voices or whisper)
- Students follow the rules
- Students respecting the adults in the cafeteria- following what the adults say
- Students following the expectations
- Teacher must create an incentive program for their class to encourage good behavior in the cafeteria (submit those plans to me by Feb. 28th).
- Monitors are consistently implementing the rules and monitoring the students, giving positive praise to those following rules, redirecting as needed
- To keep the volume low, monitors should not be yelling at students but rather go over the student and praise, redirect or ask them what they need
- Teachers are to make a seating chart for their class and give a copy to the monitors. Seating chart must list who is responsible for trash and wiping the table.
- Teachers are to be on time to pick up their students.
- Teachers are to escort their class to and from the cafeteria. Teachers must bring them all the way in the cafeteria and pick them up from the line at the end. Reminder their there no talking in the halls, we walk on the right side in a line and teachers needs to reinforce this expectation.

Random Acts of Kindness Week & SEL Time
Additionally, the SEL Team is challenging classrooms to the “I AM Challenge”. During RAK week, think about challenging your students to use words of affirmations with themselves by finishing the sentence, “I am__(insert positive quality)________. Create an interactive bulletin board of “I am mirrors” (see attachment), make a video of affirmations, or have students create a writing piece about the strengths they possess and how they can use those strengths to meet challenges. To celebrate use the hashtag-#IamAPS on Twitter and tag @SEL_APS and @ClaraTGreen.
