This Thursday Food Waste Audit
We will have volunteers from Food Waste Warriors, the US Green Building Council, Parkside PTA as well as students helping in conducting the food waste audit.
In the cafeteria there will be buckets for each type of waste and the volunteers will assist students in putting their waste in each bucket. If students bring lunch from home there is a bucket for that too.
The Food Waste Warriors and the US Green Building Council will be at Parkside to conduct an audit of our cafeteria waste streams! Because our school leadership is passionate about this, we can explore ways to minimize our cafeteria waste. But first, we need to measure it so that we know what we're up against.

SEL May Book of the Month
The May SEL Book of the Month is Tree of Peace by Jeanette Winter. This book is about the environmentalist, women’s rights activist, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai, who changed the trajectory of a country by the simple act of organizing women to plant trees. Wangari Maathai uses the fable of a hummingbird to describe how the actions of one can have a powerful impact. Check out Wangari telling the “I will be the hummingbird” story here: https://tinyurl.com/IamtheHummingbird. In the spirit of Wangari, please encourage your students to think of one little thing they can do to make their community a better place. My little thing Video: https://tinyurl.com/MyLittleThing. The guide to Tree of Peace is attached. Lastly, if you would like me or another guest reader to join your class to read and discuss this wonderful book, please let me know! |
