November IB Learner Profile- CaringCaring - I respect the needs and feelings of others and show concern for the world around me. I hope you are had a great week. As promised the SEL lessons for November have been uploaded to the November folder. Spanish translations will be available soon. Here is the direct link for convenience.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xnJiYu7YhrgmP8kEq9z44T7aJynajWCx?usp=sharing Additionally, the November SEL book of the month resources have been completed and are in the resource hub. Our November read, Draw Together, by Minh Le and Dan Santat is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel highlighting a tale of a grandfather and grandson, separated by not just a generation gap, but a language and culture gap, as well. However, when the grandfather sees his grandson get a sketch book out, they begin to draw a world of adventure together. This book highlights our ability to build bridges of connections even when we think we do not have much in common. I have included some fun activities in the November lessons, incorporating the book and our SEL competency and theme of Social Awareness and Empathy.

These observations will last for about 10 minutes and at the end, I will give one or two students a lanyard with a badge. Once all observations are completed and all students selected, I will let everyone know the purpose and outcome.
I am looking for authentic student behavers so please do not prompt students. Shout Outs!

When you receive a newly registered student, please contact Mr. Carpenter with the student's full name so that a device can be checked out to the new student. Note it usually takes 24 hours after enrollment before the device can be checked out to the student.
Ideally students are only using the device that is checked out to them and not a classmate's device.

3 Hour Planning Sessions THIS WEEK
Please plan to have coverage in your room and have activities students can attend to without.
Here are some suggestions:
- make up work (next week is the last week in the quarter)
- 30 minutes or more on reading program (iRead, Freckle, Epic, SYSTEM 44, Read 180)
- 30 minutes or more on Zearn or IXL
- 25 minutes on REFLEX
GRADES- QUARTER 1 ENDS THIS WEEK
GRADES in IC by WEDNESDAY at MIDNIGHT!
MUST give homeroom IB grades and HEALTH grades.
For students who are failing or have 0’s or have 50’s, give the students time to make up the work. They will have until the end of the quarter (9 weeks). Students MUST be given time to make up the work. The goal is to support students to mastery and give them multiple opportunities for practice (remember Marzano’s research found to get to 80% mastery students needed at least 24 exposures with half of the exposures close together).
Suggestion for grading and putting it in IC:
- Name the practice by standard number (RL3) and then practice 1 (P1) so first exposure is RL3 P1. Grade students. Any student who needs more practice or remediation (below 80-85%) must get another opportunity. Name that one RL3 P2 (for practice 2). Give grades only to those who did the work again the rest are blank. Repeat this until the students achieve 80-85% mastery. Not all students will need that much practice but some will
If you haven't already, you must reach out to the parents of students who are failing.
Remember you give one grade a week in reading, math and ELA. One grade a week in either SS or Science.
Updates from Harris
- Parkside ES Admin Team is monitoring the usage of our SECOND STEP Curriculum Platform. Reports will be shared on Monday, 10/3
- Please be mindful that SEL take place 7:45-8:00, if you do not complete your lesson, you may continue at another time during the day when you have an opportunity.
- Panda Pals Mentor Program Members will meet on Thursday, Sept. 29th @ 3:15 in Ms. Underwood’s Class
- It’s imperative that teachers monitor scholars outside at recess. We are having a lot of incidents during this timeframe every day. I know that there is a much needed time to unwind but the scholars must be supervised and monitored at all times. We need all hands on deck.
- Revisit our school wide discipline plan. Please adhere to the plan in place. Also please ensure you complete a discipline referral prior to sending a student to the main office.
- Take attendance by 7:50
- The main office will mark all tardy scholars starting at 7:50
- No students are in the cafeteria after 7:45, therefore, any scholar arriving to class after 7:50 should have a tardy pass. If a scholar arrives after the identified time, that means he or she was not where no in the proper location. – monitors send all scholars to class at 7:45
- Remind your parents to send in absentee excuses when a scholar is out and forward it to the main office
- 3 and 5 day attendance letters were mailed out on last week
- We are addressing attendance issues but some teachers are NOT UPDATING THE CONTACT LOG IN INFINITE CAMPUS. The team has NO LEGS to stand on when we are reaching out to parents. Parents are stating, “No one has notified me or called to discuss attendance issues”.
