Happy Birthday to...Ms. Evans 9/27 Ms. Harris 9/30 What's Happening this Week?Monday 9/26
PUMP 8-8:30 EverydayREADING- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 1st and 2nd GRADE iREAD 30 minutes- make sure students are logged in and working 3rd, 4th and 5th GRADE SYSTEM 44 or READ 180 30 minutes- make sure students are logged in and working MATH- Thursday, Friday 1st-5th Do the Math Lesson 3 & 4 GRADESThe END of QUARTER 1 is in 2 WEEKS! The quarter ends on September 30th with last minute make-up time week of 10/3-10/7. Posting IC window will close on the 7th.
For students who are failing or have 0’s or have 50’s, give the students time to make up the work. They will have until the end of the quarter (9 weeks). Students MUST be given time to make up the work. The goal is to support students to mastery and give them multiple opportunities for practice (remember Marzano’s research found to get to 80% mastery students needed at least 24 exposures with half of the exposures close together). Suggestion for grading and putting it in IC:
If you haven't already, you must reach out to the parents of students who are failing. Remember you give one grade a week in reading, math and ELA. I grade a week in either SS or Science. At quarter health grades must be given (participation is 100%) and usually SEL time. FYI- students do not fail health.

Eric Carpenter STRATEGIES to Teach Students How to Keep FocusedKEEP Parents in the Loop- Weekly CommunicationVolunteer Release FormWhat to Read after Red: A Crayon StoryAfter reading this month's SEL book, Michael Hall's Red: A Crayon's Story, with your class and had great classroom conversations about identity. If you would like to extend that conversation out of the realm of allegory, I welcome you to stop by the library and borrow Kyle Lukoff and Keylani Juanita's When Aiden Became a Brother. This Stonewall Award Honor book is brilliantly written and gorgeously illustrated and offers another chance to discuss the SEL theme of individuality and positive self-concept with your students. Narrative Writing AssessmentI have come around and spoken with each of you about the upcoming APS Narrative Writing Assessment. The district is requesting that the assessment be administered on Friday, September 16, 2022, OR Monday, September 19, 2022. The assessment time is 60-75 minutes, and the entire grade level must be administered at the same time. As a grade level will you please determine which day works best based on your daily schedules and give me this information no later than Monday, September 12th COB! In addition, will you please also inform me as to if you want student responses to be digital or paper pencil. As a team, we will have to grade the student responses and upload the data to the APS platform. We will schedule time to complete this work prior to the due date. To support you with preparing our Pandas for the assessment, I have provided you with the following:
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email or give me a call. Thank you for ALL you are doing! You are appreciated! Love Leading Literacy, Michelin Taylor What's Happening This Week?Monday 9/5 NO SCHOOL Tuesday 9/6

SEL & IB September Book of the MonthBelow is the IB Attribute of the Month, the Approaches to Learning and this month's SEL Book of the Month for SEPTEMBER. We encourage you to continue to align these two programs with the work that you're doing here at Parkside. You may find links to additional lessons and resources below as well. ATTRIBUTE OF THE MONTH: KNOWLEDGEABLE I am developing an understanding of the world around me, locally, and globally. APPROACHES TO LEARNING: Self-Management States of mind (mindfulness, perseverance, emotional management, self-motivation, resilience) SEL BOOK OF THE MONTH: Red: A Crayon's Story By: Michael Hall Red is a blue crayon with a red label. Everyone calls him Red because that’s what his label says. Everyone expects him to draw in red, but as much as Red tries, he can’t. Some say he just needs practice. Others think he is just not that smart. One day, a friend asks him to draw her an ocean for her boat, and he’s great at it! After this, he realizes his label was wrong. He’s not Red, he’s Blue! Once his peers recognize he is a blue crayon, they praise his drawing abilities and call him brilliant.
