SEL Book of the Month
The SEL Book of the Month is Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai. Many of you are familiar with Malala’s amazing story - as a young girl, she defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012 but survived. In 2014, she became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
While the book does not talk about this violent incident, it does capture her dreams as a child in Pakistan to create a world where all girls receive an education. This beautifully illustrated volume tells Malala's story for a younger audience and shows them the worldview that allowed Malala to hold on to hope even in the most difficult of times.
In addition to using the book of the month guide attached, I think it’s powerful for students to see Malala in action. Please consider showing all or some of Malala Yousafzai's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech or one of the millions of other videos of her online.
Students will likely have lots of questions about where she’s from, her use of a hijab, and why girls weren’t allowed to go to school in her country. If you would like me to join your class for a discussion of this book, please let me know!
