Teaching kids the right way to say 'I’m sorry'This was a great podcast I listened to last week. I always try and have students restore their harm and found this podcast helpful and wanted to share. Listen and Read the Article: www.kqed.org/mindshift/62290/teaching-kids-the-right-way-to-say-im-sorry It’s a common scenario – one that plays out in schools and homes all the time. A child hurts another child, physically or emotionally. Grownups are called in to arbitrate. The adult tells one – or perhaps all – of the kids to say, “I’m sorry.” Those two words are uttered, and all is supposed to be well. But the resolution is often lopsided. “When you just do that quick apology, you feel better, you move on,” said fifth grade teacher Rayna Freedman. “But oftentimes the other person is still left with a bucket of feelings.” She remembers that from her own childhood, and she sees it all the time in her classroom at Jordan Jackson Elementary School in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Rest of the article is in the link above. or listen to it. Shout Outs

Movies in Classroom and Movie ServiceAs returning teachers know, last year Parkside's PTA purchased a movie license from Swank K-12 Streaming. This license allows for the legal and proper viewing of a collection of film in the classroom for non-educational purposes. Normally watching a movie as a treat or reward would be a violation of fair use, but with the license purchased by the PTA films streamed from the Swank website are pre-licensed for both classroom and event viewing for educational and noneducational purposes. There are 40 G rated films on the licensed list, and hundreds more that can be added to the list with a few clicks. If you are new to Parkside, or simply need a brief reminder, let me know and we can set up a quick tutorial time to get you set up and started. Principal Foster will share his expectations around use of film/video during the instructional day and has asked that you get his preapproval before viewing anything more than G rated with your students. on the tab above for Key Documents you will find the form Mr. Foster needs returned to him prior to any use of movies in your classroom.
