5 Scaffolding Strategies to Bolster Student LearningWhen teachers break up instruction into manageable chunks and provide support structures, it makes learning more accessible for all students. Scaffolding is a term you hear all the time in education and yet sometimes it feels like we know more about what it looks like in a construction project than in the classroom. Like on a building, scaffolding is a temporary support structure. It supports students so they can better comprehend the material and build more complex skills than they would without help. You gradually take it away as they move towards independence. Here are five ways to build scaffolding into your practice to help your students reach new heights. Shout Outs

ELA- 3 grades MATH- 3 grades Reading- 3 grades Science- 1 or 2 grades Social Studies- 1 or 2 grades Specials- 1 grade Class DojoThis a friendly reminder about the use of Class Dojo at Parkside. Please keep the following in mind if you use the platform. 1. It is used to reinforce positive behaviors that students display. It is not used to punish or shame students for undesirable behaviors. 2. Earned points should not be taken away. 3. Because these points are in a way equivalent to students’ grades, they should not be displayed or shared with the class. Points should only be known by the student and the student’s parents. Consider conferencing with students to provided them with updates on their points. 4. Displaying the points for everyone to see is not appropriate (awarding points should not be the job of a student). If you need a device to house this platform, please see Ms. Harris. 5. Remember, Dojo is not the official tool used to communicate behavioral issues with parents. That should be done via call, conference, or email. We will communicate these guidelines to parents so that everyone is on the same page. Thank you for adhering to these guidelines and please see me if you have any questions. Activating Learning by Milling to MusicThere is a strong body of research indicating the benefits of movement and activity in the classroom. When combined with cooperative tasks, they can be a potent tool for learning. At Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary School in Gatineau, Quebec, third- and fourth-grade teacher Fiona Medley uses a playful strategy to get kids up out of their chairs and participating: She lets them wander around and chat about ideas with each other—while playing music. Although she also employs traditional reading and writing activities to help her students develop language skills, Medley relies on music, movement, and other arts integration strategies to teach vocabulary, story structure, and active listening. When it comes time to write, students are inspired, creative, and more focused. Shout Outs
Happy Birthday to...Mr. Carpenter 8/24 Ms. Henderson 8/30 Dr. D 8/31 What's Happening This Week?MAP READING AND MATH TEST! Monday 8/21
2-Hour Block this Week is Independent PlanningIndividual planning time looks like- conference with parents, grade papers, plan for instruction, work in classroom, look at data... set up meetings with coaches as needed, plan with peers, complete grade level newsletters, prep anchor charts, set up FUNdation boards and IB walls, read over FUNdations lesson, etc. MAP READING & MATH THIS WEEKReminder students to try their best, work through difficult problems. Take this assessment seriously. BUT don't STRESS THEM OUT! Provide accommodations. Younger students complete in smaller groups. Monitor students while taking the test. USE SCRATCH PAPER for MATH!!! Have your students fold their scratch paper into sixths and number each block. Then do their math work in each coordinated number block. Collect the scratch paper so you can analyze their possible errors. Please ensure after you create your assessments, you input ANY ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SCHOLARS WITH A 504 OR IEP. This step is imperative! If you have any concerns pertaining to inputting accommodations, please see me, ASAP! Mr. Carpenter is distributing headphones to those classrooms that expressed a need on last week. Mr. Carpenter will also create a schedule for device classroom sharing. We are short on devices for our Kinder homerooms. They have iPads, not chromebooks. We will need to borrow one class cart daily during the 8:00-9:45 AM timeframe. GRADES- Content TeachersGrade books must be up and categories set (all except health)- 65% practice/participation, 35% assessment. Health is 100% participation. In a week and a half we will be at the progress report time.

Thursday Communication to ParentsSummary of Key Takeaways from Last week
Building Community with Shout-OutsNurture a positive, supportive atmosphere in your classroom with fun and fast peer shout-outs. Teacher: A shout-out is a positive comment given from one peer to another. Shout-outs are such an effective strategy for anyone, and you can throw them in anywhere. They’re easy, they’re quick. The first thing is a ding on my little chime, which gets everyone’s attention. Good, I see almost everybody. I will ask each group to give a shout-out to someone that they noticed was doing a particularly good job, or doing something that was difficult for them. Student: I have a shout-out for Deanelis, because she was working really hard on her chicken. Shout Outs!!
