Happy Birthday to...Ms. Goens 10/11 Counselor Brown 10/24 Ms. Lowe 10/25 Ms. Dunn 10/27 This Week's Updates90 minute block this week:
Reminder 10/14 & 10/1510/14 & 10/15 are Professional Development days- agenda coming soon Pre-K WeekThis week, all week, is Pre-K week. The theme is Llama Llama Red Pajama. There will mystery readers each day in the classes (Tuesday our local Senator Jan Orrock, District Personal, Principal Foster, etc.) Each day will be a different dress up day for them! Book FairBook Fair this week, all week. Ms. Wilborn will email out a schedule. During the book fair the library will remain open for book check outs and drop offs. Library Book Check Out & Take HomeAll students Pre-K through 5th grade can check out book from the media center (regardless of fines) and EVERY student is allow to take the book home. There is no policy where books are not allowed to go home for Pre-K through 2nd graders. For our students to practice reading and build a love for reading they need to also read a home. So if you do not let students take home their library books, this needs to stop. Starting tomorrow library books can go home. Remind your students of your library day and for them to bring back the book. SEL Book of the MonthThe Day You Begin, by Jacqueline Woodson is a beautiful story that highlights the theme of diversity and acceptance, an important component of Social-Awareness. This story encourages children to find the beauty in their own lives and the courage to share it with the world. Attached you will find the APS SEL book of the month guide for The Day You Begin. I hope you and your students enjoy this book. If you capture any SEL moments with the book or theme, please share them with me! I’m eager to see your activities and participate whenever possible. From Clara Green OCTOBER SEL CompetencyCongratulations to Ms. Fulmer and Ms. Lowe for winning the SEL Teacher and Support Staff of the Month award for September!
For October, our SEL competency, theme, and description are: SEL Competency= Social-Awareness Theme: Diversity/Acceptance Description: This individual has the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures (including students, parents, and coworkers). They are committed to making Parkside an equitable, welcoming and safe place for all children. They work to make Parkside feel inclusive, from greeting people in the hallways to recognizing that each of our students come to school with their own stories to tell.

Shout Outs
- Ms. S. Williams and Ms. Rucker actively consulting with Ms. Fulmer about Guided Reading lessons and sharing ideas of activities to help move students in Guided Reading levels A-D. I think it really says A LOT about teamwork when teachers work across grade levels and COLLABORATE.
- Ms. Fulmer’s class and Ms. L. Miles’ class have partnered up so their students can read to each other in small groups of 2 and 3 students. Students really seemed to enjoy this !
- Ms. Scott's class and Ms. Manning's class have buddy readers and get the students together once a week for the older students to read to the younger students.
- In reviewing STAR scores for a student conference with Ms. Rucker, I noticed that a student went up several hundred points from last year to this year in reading AND math. I complimented Ms. Rucker, but she pointed out (rightly so) that Ms. Manning was mostly responsible for his growth because she was his teacher last year. GREAT TEAM WORK !!!
- There is no “I” in team. When we all work together, great things happen !!!
- On behalf of your students, thank you !!

Free Headspace Membership for Educators
https://www.headspace.com/educators
I have a paid subscription, and really enjoy the opportunity to slow down and check in through this app. There is quite a bit of research out there on how mindful practice benefits educators and indirectly improves the student experience as well. Definitely worth a try!
And of course, if you would like me to lead a mindfulness lesson in your classroom, please let me know!
Thank you!

Garden Room Resources & Updates from PTA
A list of available resources is attached. Teachers can check out the actual materials from the Parkside Garden Room, starting this week!
Use the checkout sheet in the garden room when you remove materials from the room. There's everything from storybooks (How Groundhog's Garden Grew) to curriculum resources (The Growing Classroom features hands-on strategies for managing garden-based science instruction for grades 2-6.) We also purchased a 3-D model that illustrates the life stages of chicks within the egg!
Parkside Chicken Update:
We're finishing building the chicken coop this fall, and plan to bring chickens to the school in the spring.
Finally, in mid-October we'll be installing picnic tables in the Learning Garden. There will be enough seating for an entire class!
We encourage you to use the space for your class: to reinforce lessons, eat lunch together, or get a change of scenery. If you're interested in planting, we can set aside space for you to use.
We hope your year is off to a great start! If we can help you with any classroom projects, reach out.

As part of the evening, teachers are welcome to visit earlier in the day to tour the Zoo and stay for the event.
This event is FREE to Georgia formal and informal Pre-K through 12th grade educators. Pre-registration is required, with registration closing on October 3. Progress Reports Go Home Thursday!
STAR must be COMPLETED by Wed 9/11/2019
I know some of your students had difficulties logging on to MYBACKPACK. Hopefully those issues have been resolved. When I called x1000 to ask why some students could log on to the desktops, but not the Chromebooks, I was told there were a lot of reports of that same problem in the district. Since STAR gives such great information, I encourage you to use the desktops so that STAR tests can be completed within the fall window.
I am putting copies of the names (per grade level) of students that have not completed tests in your mailboxes. If there is still a problem with the log in, please write it on your sheet and give it back to me. It is a double sided copy, with reading on one side and math on the other.
Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks, Ms. Norton
