Panda PonderAn analysis comparing the engaged reading time and reading scores of more than 2.2 million students found that students who read less than five minutes per day saw the lowest levels of growth, well below the national average.2 Even students who read 5–14 minutes per day saw sluggish gains that were below the national average. Only students who read 15 minutes or more a day saw accelerated reading gains—that is, gains higher than the national average—and students who read just over a half-hour to an hour per day saw the greatest gains of all. 15 minutes seems to be the “magic number” at which students start seeing substantial positive gains in reading achievement; students who read just over a half-hour to an hour per day see the greatest gains of all. Gifted TABS Due 10/29/18
from Dr. Donerlson
Our annual APS Gifted TABs (Traits, Aptitudes, and Behaviors checklist) window opens on Monday, OCT 15 and closes on FRI, OCT 26. I am providing you with this link to the TABs training video as well as the TABs descriptors in the attachment. Please watch the video or review the handout (or review both) prior to OCT 15. You will be alerted by email when the online TABs portal is open for evaluations; it will open on or after Monday, OCT 15 and instructions for use of the online TABs portal will be shared in that email. Observe the student traits through the two week window, OCT 15- OCT 26. You may begin observations as early as October 15 even if the portal is not yet available.
The 9 minute TABs training video is available at https://youtu.be/oIkLJxxGpvU. This is a video created for the 2018 school year, but it is timeless information. Nothing has changed. Ignore the dates and you will be all set for OCT 15.
TABs link:
The TABs link for referring students for gifted testing is now available for all teachers to rate students. Students are assigned to teachers based on their rosters in Infinite Campus. The student lists have been filtered to show only those not currently eligible for gifted services.
- When the portal opens, all teachers should click the red “Evaluate Your Students” button.
- On the next screen log in using your @atlanta.k12.ga.us email address and the default password of 123456. All teachers have been pre-loaded, but if you are unable to log in using your @atlanta.k12.ga.us email address, please click the “Sign Up” button at the bottom of the login options and register with your APS email address so your login will be “linked” to your non-gifted eligible students.
- The screen will then populate with your non-gifted identified students on your rosters.
- Click a student name, a new window opens and you may click each rating in the ten areas all at once and click “submit” only once per child this year to complete the child!
- Each TABs area provides buttons to click for your rating – 1 being “no evidence” and 5 being “exhibited consistently” and you may rate scores in between based on your observations. Scores are saved only when you click “SUBMIT” at the bottom of that window.
- You may submit ratings at any time through the window and come back to the portal at any time to complete more students.
- Each time you log in, the students you have completed will populate in the list of “Evaluated Students” at the very bottom.
- When you have rated all necessary students, please go to the top left-hand corner and click the “Update Evaluator Status” button. Change your teacher status from “Incomplete” to “Complete” and click “Submit.” You are then DONE.
- You may use the “add filters” button in the top left to search for a student by name. Teachers may search for an individual name to quickly find a student exhibiting the traits who needs to be rated. Specials/Connections teachers may want to score students by exception through the use of this “add filters” option.
- The deadline to provide all student ratings is Friday, OCT 26, at the end of the school day.
- The screens should be self-explanatory. Thank you for your support as we work to screen all students with the TABs!
- If you have a problem that prevents you from scoring a child, click the “TABs Issue Reporting” button at the top of the page and complete that form to describe your issue.
- Be sure you are using your @atlanta.k12.ga.us email address and the password 123456
- Only teachers with students rostered to them will be able to log-in (Media Specialists, Paraprofessionals, etc. will not have access)
